Hi Guys, Throughout my fly fishing journey, I have been blessed by having generous friends who have helped filled my fly boxes with flies I have so often heard them say that its very satisfying to tie their own special patterns and catch fish with it. I too have now start to tie my own flies and taste for myself this creative thrill that my friends have been enjoying. This is my fly tying corner that I have setup in my study. For the past week, I have started trying to tie Deceivers and must have tied and cut close to 15 flies cause they looked horrible or I have used the wrong materials or tying method. Last night and this morning, I have manage to tie 3 Deceivers that look decent. First fly with Olive Grizzly wing The second attemp with white saddle hackle The third fly with Grizzly saddle hackle. Hooks: Dai Ichi Long Shank No 10175 Size 2. Thread: Danville's Black 3/0 waxed monocord. Wing: 3 pairs of Whiting American Rooster Saddle hackles (Olive Grizzly, White and Grizzly with strands of Cascade Crest Tools Crystal Mirror Flash. Gills: Just Add Water Red Fluoro Fibre. Collar: Cream Bucktail. Overwing: Peacock Hearl Tutorial: Fly Tyer Sspring 2005 issue page 58 I started lasted night at about 10.30 in the evening and finished the second one at 1.30 am. I then woke up at 7.00 this morning and started on the 3rd fly which took about 45 minutes. Its starting to get addictive... Don't hold back, all comments welcome ;D regards Alberto

nice tries at decievers. i think the tails are a little too long. the tail on my flies is normally 1 and 1/2 the length of the hook, sometimes 2 times, depending on the baitfish i want to imitate. the tail of the first fly seems to be arranged the best. keep tying. ur doing well.
Happy tying! ;D
will post a pic of my i tied last night deciever sometime.

Hi Alberto,
Very nice flies, much better than my first attempt. I guess it the eye that caught my attention first, that why the second fly look tempting than the others. The third fly seem to have threads wrapped over the hook eye, I have that mistake when over wrapping too. Try to a gap there.
I would use the wall behind the vise for the photo shoot, I think it would be less reflective than the box cover that you are using. Soon, we'll be seeing Tashiro's patterns right. ;D Keep it up.
Cheers Qwek

Hi Guys, Last night, I sat down and attempt to try and tie some Crazy Charlies. I have tried it a little differently by using Marabou feathers instead of Bucktail or Polar Fiber for the wing. Here are the results The both are basically the same except for the body and head color. Both head are finished with a coat of Head cement and my wife's clear nail varnish This is the first one with Hologram tinsel on the hook shank and a red finish for the head. This is the other one that I tied with red tinsel on the body and a black head. Both of the Charlies are tied on Owner Circle Mutu Light Wire 1/0 Hooks regards Alberto

Hi Alberto,
That's very creative, there is also a version tied with CDC you may want to try that as well. One suggestion, try keeping the marabou wing shorter.
Cheers Qwek

Hi Q, Thanks for the advice - will bear that in mind ;D The short length if the marabou is to prevent the feathers from fouling on the hook? I thought longer the marabou feather, the better the pulsing action when stripping the fly? regards Alberto ps I have just joined the fly tying forum and getting a lot of ideas from there. The marabou feather is also from one of the patterns I seen in the forum - so cannot take credit for being creative

Hi Guys, This flytying is addictive I got back home rather late last night but could not stay away from the vice.... I have to try and tie something.... ... this is the result. My first attempt at a shrimp/squid. Not quite sure which it looks like. The body is preformed silicone and I slide it over the hook like rubber over your willie if you know what I mean Tied on a Tiemco size 10 hook, feelers are Whiting Grizzle Dry Fly Hackle and the rest are red mirror flash, white saddle and a pinch of green polar fiber together with red eyes. regards Alberto

Hi Alberto,
You're playing with rubber also. Now that's a very nice imitation, let try it out this saturday.
Just a note, not sure if the fly will ride hook down or up. Coz, the eyes look a bot heavy to me. But it will made no diff to the fish ;D
Cheers Qwek

This flytying is addictive ... could not stay away from the vice.... I have to try and tie something.... Alberto It is addictive Alberto - and from the looks of it you have quite a skill - keep up the good work. One thing I will add - although you might be tying the tails long now, remember you cannot add length to them if you tie them short. Cheers, George

hi albert, i disagree with the comment on your deceiver tails being too long.. i kinda like the proportions myself.. but that just goes to show how varied fly tying can be.. whats most important is that you like the look of the fly and have confidence using it.. in fact, i think thats the most important part of fly design.. the confidence you have in it but a point to note about tail length other than the risk of fouling... is the chance of short striking by a fish.. there are certain times when i tie flies with really short tails cos the fish were short striking. so that is something you might want to keep in mind. with your marabou charlies, the chance of fouling is quite high since its a really soft material tied quite close to the eye. but unless they go round the hook many times, the basic shape should remain.. and they will still catch fish for deceivers, the hackle is tied near the bend of the hook to minimise the risk of it fouling. the bucktail is also meant to help keep the hackle in place. overall really nice flies.. way better than my first attempts.. same with qwek, im a firm believer in eyes on my flies and try to include them when possible.. also like the red crystal flash as gills.. im sure the fish would love them as well.. next time lets see one of your flies in a fishes's mouth.. their the most important critics

Hi Guys, Thanks for the comments and tips. I appreciate you'll sharing your thoughts and expertise so that I can learn. Dear George, Thanks for the compliment Like I said earlier, I have cut up quite a few files to reach this stage. But the encouragement and support from the guys at the forum has keep me going ;D Dear Mat, I know what you mean short strike by fish. I have tied this batch for a trip to Bintan next week and I believe in big flies, big fish ;D Once again, I was caught by the tying bug last night and I attempted to tie a fly called "Half n Half" Here is what my attempt looks like... My own opinion is that I might have overdressed this fly. I thought that Half n Half means half Deceiver, half Clouser. What do you'll think? regards Alberto

hmnz, i don't see anything wrong with that.. maybe a slightly bigger hook? ps. the ends of your bucktail look like they were cut. realised they were a tad longer than you wanted? doubt the fish would notice though..
