Aiseh, I only post the 'good stuff' lah. Somedays also kosong, nada, zero. No fish, so nothing to post. ;D My kids and I are really appreciative of all the advice and guidance given by kakis from FW3 (your good self included), Coho and FFS. Now we embark on a lifelong journey. My one regret is that I waited so long to pick fly fishing; my young jedi knights will have no such regrets. ;D

7 Aug 2009. A nice Pacu caught on an Black, Orange & Cream streamer. The 'Green Hornet' & 'Kuay Kua' flies which have more or less guaranteed a catch have not been working lately. So, I made up this fly and it has proven successful on a couple of occasions catching a baby Chao and this Pacu. ;D

FISH-2, FLYER-0
Last Friday, I went over to get my regular 'fix' at FW3.
Stationed at my favourite corner near the pump, I was retrieving a black woolly bugger. The boss came by and we chatted for a minute. Then he went away. In the meantime, my fly line had floated in by the side. I pulled in the line. It seemed stuck on something. I lifted up the rod, the line did not budged. I pulled hard on the rod... and it began to move ever so slowly. Still thinking that it was stuck, I pulled harder to dislodge whatever it was. Then the line began to move away from the edge. Hey, not stuck leh... I got a fish on!
The mysterious fish started to accelerate, stepped up a gear. It took up all my free line from the water. I tightened the drag to slow it down. No effect. I palmed the reel. Also no effect. I could feel a very heavy fish at the end of the line. It pulled like a locomotive and took out all 90ft of my fly line and into the backing. It did not stop until it reached the other end of the pond and then it stopped. I pulled with my puny 3wt but was unable to coax it out. Then I felt something give... and I knew I had lost the fish. The 5x tippet broke. Sigh...
Speaking with experienced anglers there, we came to the conclusion that it was probably an Amazon Redtail catfish. Shucks, that's probably the 2nd time. On another occasion, I had lost a similar black woolly bugger under similar circumstances.
I lost another fish that same day, probably a Chao Phraya or a big Pacu. So, the score was fish 2, angler KOSONG. Grrrr...
I'll be back...

You don't have to wonder wat issit la! its a turtle! ;D ;D ;D Turtle? More like submarine ahh! ;D ;D FISH-0, FLYER-1Anyway, went back to FW3 for further 'punishment'. Landed a decent sized Pacu... again on my black/orange/cream streamer. Took the following picture - see how the Pacu 'deepthroat' my fly.

29 AUG 2009 - FISH 2, FLYER-0 Home team won... again. Woke up early to do a 'quickie' at FW3. Arrived at 6:30am. Set up my fly tackle and started with some new flies that I had tied recently. Hmm, new flies not effective leh. At 7:30am, the handler started feeding bread to the fishes. I switched to my tried and tested black/orange/cream streamer. Lauched my fly where the handler was throwing the bread. Had a strong take. Set the hook and the fish was on! It tore away sending a fountain of spray up as the line stripped across the water. Ahh, what a shiok feeling! Settled down for a fight but unfortunately, the line went limp soon after. I reeled back to find the hook tip broken off. Grrrr. Put on a similar fly and tried again. Half an hour later, I felt a heavy weight on my line and stripped. Immediately, the slack line tore off. Ooooh, feeels big! Palmed the reel with limited effect. Almost into my backing before the brute stopped. Then it turned and ran towards me. Wah seow leow! Stripped like mad to maintain tension on the line. Managed to keep the line tight. Settled down for a bruising battle with what was no doubt a big cat. A tug of war ensued as the beast traded line with me, inch for inch. Wah heng ah, I was using my 5wt rather than my usual 3wt. Even so after a while, my wrist began to hurt. A fellow fly fisherman was nearby and I asked if he would like to take over. Handed my rod over while I rested. Not long after, the hook pulled off. It was a good fight while it lasted. So, no fish to show except for 2 mangled flies, tsk, tsk, tsk...

30 AUG 2009, FISH-0, FLYER-1This time, home team lost, kekeke. Returned to FW3 to avenge the previous day's defeat. Thought I was early when I reached @ 6:30am but another flyer was there before me - ninetail! Again I tried out some new flies... but again rejected. Sigh... When the handler started feeding bread @ 7:30am, I switched back to my proven fly - BOC (black/orange/cream). I thought to myself "Ho sei leow! Napshot one, sure kenna fish with my BOC fly." With great anticipation, I launched my fly... Ai... why no bite leh... cast and cast... no bite. Cast and cast... still no bite. First time my BOC fly not working during feeding time. Hah, no such thing as napshot one. Strolled over to the pump. Cast out my BOC fly... 1 strip, 2 strip... BAM! A solid take! Line spilled out through my fingers. I set the hook to be sure. Hmm not bad, felt like a solid fish. It fought like a slugger. No dramatic splash, no sizzling run, just a strong heavy pull. Uluk, tarek... uluk, tarek... we traded line back and forth. 5wt setup no problem lah, sub sub soi. Bought the fish in easily, a nice fat Pacu. Haha, confirmation that my BOC fly works! Soon after, the heavens opened up. Next hour or so, drink coffee and TCSS with ninetail. Rode back home in the pouring rain.

big fat Pacu. very long didn't catch them already... ;D Ahh, your wish fullfilled yesterday - congrats on your catch of 2 nice Pacus and a milkfish. Me, yet to land a milkfish. Snapped a picture of your milkfish with my handphone. Another grassie caught on a black streamerYesterday, I caught only a small grassie on a black streamer. Previously, caught one on a green fly. This small fella put up quite a good fight. Had to strip like crazy to keep up with its runs. Highlight for me was my son's tussle with the Song He on my BOC fly. Unfortunately, he lost it after a spirited 15 minutes fight. Quite a big fella too.

FISH-0, FLYER-4 Haha, home team defeated yet again. ;D 7 Sep 2009, the beginning of school holidays and what better way to spend it than fly fishing @ FW3. The fishes were really snapping on flies that day more so than the baits offered. The bait fishermen were out-fished by the flyers, quite a rare occurrence. Besides the following catches, we had numerous bust-offs, thrown hooks and missed hookups. Not bad for half a day's fishing. Ahhh, what a nice day for fly fishing @ FW3... ;D Big Amazon Redtail taken on BOC fly by Boy G. This bruiser proved too much for a 7 year old so dad had to subdue it. Still took 20 minutes to land on a 3wt setup. Apparently, this may be the first and biggest Redtail landed on fly @ FW3. Nice fat Sultan fish caught on BOC fly. Quite a sprinter and not easily subdued. A fat Pacu taken on Red woolly bugger. The Pacus are getting fatter. A decent sized Pacu caught on BOC fly. Boy G tackled this fish by himself and experienced line burn for the first time, something he won't forget quickly... ;D
