Hi Guys, The Gurglers I have in my fly box have been given to me by my friends but they tend to be big and not easy to cast with my light #2 fly rod and especially with light tippets. Furthermore they were tied with fairly big long shank hooks. I have one that is meant for Toman which is huge (have yet to use that one ) But they not a problem to cast with a #4 rod and a heavier tippet. So I have been wondering how small can I tie a gurgler. I tried last night on a size 14 Mustard Signature R72 hook. This is how it small I manage to get it down to The body itself is about 10mm long. I first tied a small bunch of white bucktail and flash to the bend of the hook shank and then palmered 2 grizzly green hackle onto the shank before tying in the foam. Both of these gurgler are the same size but with different flash for the tail. I can increase the grith of the gurgler by cutting the foam a little wider and still use the same size hook as seen in the gurgler at the bottom. I have to say a big thank you to Q for directing me to FAOL to see how to tie the Jack Gartside' Gurgler. regards Alberto

Hey Alberto, Your tying skills is definitely improving by leaps and bounds. Very very nicely done flies dude. Which part of China do you always travel to? If you are coming to Shanghai, how about letting me test out some of your flies with the local fishes here.... .....I will give you some of mine in exchange..... cheers trouty

Hi Trouty, Thanks for the compliment ;D
Earlier this year from Feb to May, I was constantly in Shanghai (Pudong - Chuan Sha, Kun San and Shuzhou). Had quite a few weekends there as well.
Wish I had known that you were there and we can test out the flies.
I'll be going to Huizhou more often in the next couple of months but if I'm ever going up to Shanghai, I'll let you know so that we can meet up ;D
regards Alberto

Hi Alberto,
Yah do keep me posted if you happen to drop by. But I must say nowadays is too hot to fish here. The temperature outside is like an oven.
October will be good for fishing here. But be reminded here is more of a carp country. And we probably need to find a transport to take us out.
A local Shanghainese friend of mine who actually flyfishes and me intend to explore some rivers up in Kunshan in october for some dry fly fishing for Topmouth Culter or culter alburnus (scientific name) or ÇÌ×ì÷ˆ, a species of fish which takes dry flies and able to grow up to 10kg in weight.
Here is excerpt from some chinese web about this type of fish.
"ÇÌ×ì°×ÊÇÒ»ÖÖË®ÃæÓ㣬×ì´óÌ°³Ô£¬´ºÎ´ÖÁÇï³õ£¬Ï²»¶ÔÚË®ÃæÉÏ׷ʳ³æ¶ê£¬Ò¹ÍíʳÐÔÒ²ºÜÇ¿¡£ÍíÉÏ°ËʱÖÁÊ®¶þʱÓûîµÄ³æ¶ê×÷ÓÕ¶ü£¬ºÜÈÝÒ×µöµ½¡£ÕâÖÖÓ㣬ÆäÈâ°×ÄÛ£¬Î¶µÀÏÊÃÀ¡£

The words in red says they feed on insects, cockroaches, ants, moths, caddis....mostly terrestrial flies...
Will go and try out and see if anything happens.
Cheers trouty

Hi Guys, Its been a long time since I sat down to tie some flies. Getting lazy So last week, I hauled my lazy butt back to the vice and got to work. It's a softhackled fly and tied in our National Colors of Red and White to celebrate the National Day that I have missed. I present to you the Singapura Lalat... The hook shank is ribbed with lead to make it sink and the tail and collar is Amherst Pheasent tippets. A transparent bead is used for the body. Red thread is used to build the head, whipped finished and coat with head cement and varnished. Execution for this fly is the same as the above one minus the Amherst Pheasent tippets on the tail. The red bit at its butt is red sculpting fur. This variation is without the transparent bead on its body and the red sculpting fur is dubbed over the hook shank to form the body. These flies has proven itself during the weekend at SP catching quite a few of the Mayans ;D Happy Birthday Singapore ;D regards Alberto

Hi Guys, Got back into the mood for tying so I hit the vice again last night. This time I'm trying a streamer pattern found in the Flytier Bible called the Black Ghost. As I did not have some of the materials, I modified it to suit what I have at the moment... I excited to see how this pattern will work with the PBs on our local water or even the pacus up in Malaysia ;D regards Alberto
