Hi Cookiemunster,
wow! if these are your first flies tied.. they r really good! i disagree that charlies are the easiest to tie, as they involve many steps.. keep it up! Charlies are however 1 of the most popular fly here coz' they are effective.
Q - what hooks are u using?
Generally, the proportions r great & u did your homework to post pics of the charlie-fly in its correct swim orientation! (hook point up).. thumbs up!
some observations: - de-barb the hook first b4 fly tying if u intend to C&R ..efforts wasted if u de-barb after fly tying & accidently break the hook ;D - some pics shows that u've tied into the hook eye, .. end off the fly head further from the hook eye, else u may have difficulty threading the tippet thru' - If u filled epoxy into the hook eye, remove with a toothpick b4 it dries. on the field, simply use another hook as a needle to remove the hardened epoxy so that u can thread the tippet. - nice variety of colors.. tie a few of each same color.. u dun want to be fishing, loose the ONLY fly when the fishes r biting it only.. ;D
jump thread..about being fly fetish.. wait till u get strange looks from other shoppers when u hang around the ladies depts choosing nail polish colors, hardeners, beads.. haHaha..
thanks for sharing ! hope to see Post catches with your tied flies soon!
cheers!

Hi cookie, It depends whether you are tying just for fishing or as an artform. Those flies you tied are good enough for any fish, I'm sure the fish will get hooked (pun intended ;D). But to be politically correct, they are actually not Charlies. More toward Gotcha which is a variation of the Crazy Charlie with tail. The last fly looked like a Clouser Minnow. Take a look at this; www.clouserflyfishing.com/clousminforb.htmlGreat imagination! Once you got the experimentation right try tying in bulks, like in tens or so. This way you will be able to keep your tying neat and in proportion. By tying in big quantity you are able to choose your best and keep that fly as future reference. Great work! Keep it up. Cheers Qwek

Fisho thanks for the kind comments. I use size 6 mustard big game light. I never thought of debarbing my hooks cos I don't want to loose fish due to thrown hooks. Until it gets too easy, perhaps I will start to debarb. I do catch and release though. Fresh water fish not so tasty to me. hahhaa ;D I do tie all the way to the eye but I always makes sure to poke thru the eye to ensure my tippet can easily tie thru. I use a 6lb tippet. Haggai, well I don't have time for luring now and furthermore I find fly fishing much more fun and fulfilling. If I can build my own lures, probably luring might still be fun. But I realized, unless I have a boat, luring from shore is quite depressing. Jimboz you've gotta bring me to places to feed the cookies to. hahaha ;D Qwek thanks for the advise. I will try to assemble more so I have a sample to follow. I was experimenting various options from the limited materials I have. I can't wait for my fly tying books to arrive so I can more reference materials. Quite hard for me to identify the flies now based on memory of what I've seen sold in COHO. Sean no need to evesdrop Henry is a really nice guy. Just buy him tea and he will teach you how to tie. Sometimes weekends are a little busy so weekdays when he is alone in the shop, he can teach the whole day and won't get tired of you. Thats how I learnt my fly tying. All taught by him. I took half day leave and spent the afternoon there learning. ;D He taught me alot of flies but I got poor memory and slow learner. Sometimes a few fly tiers there would give me a few pointers too and it really helps.

Hey Cookie, do let your imagination run will but at the same time the fly must look decent in a sense that , dun add to much stuffs or it will look like a lump of shit! When you tie a fly, once you get the basic, then do a little of your own modification and whala! you have your own fly pattern. Sometimes make it neat and simple... you will catch a fish wif it!

Hi there cookie,
One trick to tying with marabou is to wet your thumb and index finger first before handling the marabou. Wet the marabou with your fingers before tying them to the hook. That way the marabou will stick together and easier to handle while tying. Once you finish your fly, the marabou dries up and it will becomes fluffy again.
Happy tying Cheers trouty

Hi Cookiemunster, Its has been said, man does not live by bread alone, or by tying charlies only. Try out other patterns and you'll find that you tying skills will improve faster as you'll have to use and employ different techniques. regards Alberto ps the wings on your last fly is very nice
