I have been fly fishing in the UK for a few years now and am visiting S'pore this August. I was wondering if anyone is available to show me the ropes for fly fishing in S'pore in terms of venues and successful flies. I am interested in catching both fresh and saltwater quarry. I have a #6/7 travel fly rod and will be packing both lines and some flies. What flies should I bring along with me ? Sinking or floating lines ? What permit/license do I need ?

Unfortunately and fortunately, there is no permit or license required in Singapore. There is only legal or illegal fishing. ;D
A #6 would be very versatile but If you wish to focus on something more reliable, it would then be the peacock bass. Most local anglers would opt for 3wt but I use up to 5wt at times.
If you are travelling light, then a floating line will be fine. However, I reckon a five weight for versatility. If you need to go deeper with a floating line, a 5wt would be easier to handle the tungstens or lead eyes.
Wooly Buggers, small clousers, and other sort of streamers would be effective. There is some limited opportunity for dry flies but nymphing would be more effective.

hello ocdangler,
Yes, Francis right about fishing in Singapore. Rather limited in fishing area but you still can get a couple of hours of flyfishing funs. 5wt would be a good all rounder.
Most flies worked well here, dries as well. Do drop us a line when you are here.
Cheers

I arrive in S'pore on 21 July 09 and am keen to get out asap to try some fly fishing in local waters. Is anyone free to show me around ? I am in S'pore until the 12 of Aug 09 when I fly back to the UK again.
