Hi all,
Been a little fish starved for a while. Plus I have yet to land a decent fish on my 7 wt that the wife bought for me as a wedding present.
Just a couple of flatheads and some breams but nothing of serious mention. Not till today.
The wife wanted to vist the library and I was dying to fish. So I got about an hour and a half to flick a fly around.
Decided to try this pond I pass on th way to work. Never saw a fish there before but was sure that it was fresh water and that it would at least hold eels and if I was lucky some bass or a perch of some sort.
So on went the polaroids and I went a walking. Sighted my first quarry. a carp of about 2pounds and managed to spook the crap out of it by falling off the bank into the pond.
went to another bank -15 mins have passed- sighted 3 good sized carp with one easily pushing the 20 pound mark. nothiced that the mooching didn't abate and decided to increase tippet length to avoid missing my chance.
First Cast resulted in a solid take and I stupidly strip struck! the 2 lb tippet gave way and I lost the fly as well as spooked the other two fish.
already 0.5 hours have passed and the wife was on her way back.Had to work fast. (out comes the breadfly) First cast.
Let it sink
waited.
line got some movement.
waited
felt the line load up slowly.
never caught carp before but something told me this was it. Remembering what I read somewhere in some fishing article, I slowly lifted the rod and gradually increased pressure till i felt weight. Leaned into the rod and struck! the hook found home and I was on!
I would like to say that there were searing runs but it was not to be. The carp fought well and did manage to threaten me with line burn once or twice. nothing sizzling but the feeling of fighting a fish on the reel and loosing line to it once in a while was most appreciated!
Head shakes and short bursts were what characterized the fight.
finally landed it after a good 2 minutes. and here's a sample of my efforts!
More catfood for the neighbourhood!(in NSW we have to kill the carp we catch as they are a feral species- their culling contributes to the conservation of our native fish species)
it weighed in at about 14 lbs and its my first carp to date. a little searching on the internet revealed that the current AUS record on fly came from this place at a whopping 11.4 kg!
enjoy! I sure did!
