Paiseh , I wasn’t expecting another Aro, was just hoping for something under the bridge to grab the fly I tied. As Henry said, beginner’s luck. I’ll be more than glad to join you guys for some sessions, if you don’t mind my ‘dangerous’ casting, I can learn something from each of you. Not sure about my work schedule though..

Met up with Jason this morning at LSR, well, actually only met him halfway thru the session as we were 300 metres apart. He had a good 'harvest' where he was standing and got 6 Pbs. At that time I only had a 1.1 pounder, he told me to walk to his spot. After a while I got a good fighting 1.5 pounder. Really good "diving" runs this fella, instead of running outwards. After that we practised casting on his 'new' rod I like it as it enabled me to feel the rod loading, Jason helped to spot my mistakes and I must say this practise session helped a lot. Thanks ah Jason! Btw, the Pbs were taken on a white Zonker I tied last nite. The 1.1 pounder The "Zonker" I used.. The 1.5 pounder..

Once in a while, you guys got to make it out to the bluewaters for some salty targets lah. James, still remember the easy pole fly game, you played on those half beak ? It should be nice to play with your 3wt... ;D

Hi Folks, it’s been a while since my last update, been really busy with work. I was in Melbourne few months back for work and managed to sneak out for some action on the weekends. I was desperate for some ‘quick’ action, so we drove to a trout farm 1hr out of the city. We headed straight to the ‘pro’ pond instead of the smaller ponds. Didn’t think any trout would rise at noon in summer, so I went for a white zonker with lead eyes. After about 15mins I got my first rainbow trout. Not much of a fight on the 5wt but it was my first trout so I was really excited. Took a quick photo and release it when no one was looking. I switched over to a nymph to target those trouts ‘lying’ at the bottom. 15-20mins later I felt a vibration and quickly raise my rod. The fight was much better. It struggled to enter into the lily pads but it was easy to steer away with the 5wt. We wanted to try what a rainbow trout tasted like so we decided to keep it. But it was accidentally ‘released’ after I tried to fill the bucket with water with the trout in it. It slipped out and I didn’t want to wade in to get it. After a few secs, it swam away.. The farm was closing soon so we headed to the smaller ponds to get 1 trout for dinner. These ponds were really easy, from what I observed, it was 1 cast = 1 trout. No fun at all. In fact 3 or 4 trouts would rush for your bait/lure/fly. The instant my orange zonker landed, the trouts went for it. Soon dinner was up.

The next weekend I decided to go and target some wild trout at the rivers. This was where I had some difficulty. I didn’t know how to cast a dry fly, mend the line, etc. Certainly not used to fast flowing waters and wading. But it was tremendous fun! I tried and tried but no takers. But towards the evening, the caddis(according to a local) came out like puffs of clouds. The action started coming. Fish were jumping here and there, taking the flies in the air. I was trying an “Iron Grey Dun” that was recommended by a local shop but my casting and mending must have been bad, no takers. I switched to a “Coachman” that was given to me by a local fly fisherman, Ryan who has been fishing for 55 years. After a while, I had a bite and it felt like a small one, so I didn’t dare to strike. I lost it after 4sec. But I was glad that I finally had a fish take my dry fly. It was getting late and we were about to head back, there was a louder splash than what I was hearing before to my right near a place where the water was calmer. By this time, I had already removed the dry fly. I quickly switched to a small white Zonker, don’t ask me why, I just felt comfortable with it. As I was tying the Zonker, that fish was splashing again, I was trying to track the fish while slipping the tippet thru the eye of the hook in near darkness. It splashed again and then all was quiet. I stood still and waited for some sign of movement. Soon to my right the water ‘rippled’ ever so slightly as it swam underneath. At the 3rd cast, it took my Zonker and I quickly landed it. I was really happy when I saw that it was a brown trout.

Wah... not too bad of an Arrowana! Big fat one! I think for quite a while, my rods would be able to touch water for now. Nice catch! Jim.
