Greetings from Boise, Idaho. It has been a long time since I have done any posting. It has been even longer since I have wet a line. My friend and flyfishing mentor recently went on a flyfishing trip to the Bighorn River in Montana. It was my first time fishing moving water for trout. The Bighorn River is very well known for its quality fishing. We hired a guide to take us out on the river in a drift boat for 2 days. I had a lot of trouble hooking up the first day, but made up for it the second. The smallest fish we caught were 14 inches. All of the fish were healthy and believed they were twice as big as they actually are. I started calling the fish torpedos. When you set the hook, you had better be ready for a ride. These fish were full of fight. We used a total of 4 patterns between the 2 of us the entire trip. We used rootbeer nymphs, orange scuds, Ray Charles, and zebra midges. We caught fish on all of the flies, but the zebra midge was the best producer. Now some of you know how limited my flyfishing skills are, so just imagine what a talented flyfisher can do on this river. Sit back and enjoy the pictures.
This is my favorite photo of the entire trip. It shows our guide (Rob) holding a nice rainbow trout Gary had caught.
Gary battling a Bighorn River bruiser.
This is our guide at the put-in location.
This is the largest fish I caught on the trip. It is a 21" brown. Gary and I both lost much larger fish.
Another nice brown.
A typical Bighorn rainbow
Another nice rainbow
And another nice rainbow.
A Montana sunset while on the road.
I hope you enjoyed the pictures as much as I enjoyed sharing this trip with you. I hope to wet a line with you again in the near future.
Shawn
