well well, yesterday was rather stressful so i decided to go for a bit of casting practice since its been months since i last casted a fly rod, and i decided since i have a new 2wt, the time was appropriate to pop the cherry. so, i made my way down to a particular legal fishing ground. i casted for just over an hour and a half, and had some bites from tiny peacocks which were about finger sized.
It was getting dark quite quickly and i decided that the fish would be holding deep. i cut off the black ghost which i had on, switched to an "old-school" clouser decided to fish it with the "old-school" "let it sink, and jig it along the bottom".
i casted out the fly and let it sink. i held the line and began to make the first strip. i had not been able to pull the fly line more than 6 inches and i felt the weight of a fish. i presume he ate the fly on the initial drop since the line had a lot of slack in it. i gave a little strip strike so that i wouldnt pop the thin 4lbs tippet. cheeky little fish decided to make a run for the rocks, putting a nice deep bend in my new 2wt rod. i actually stopped his run! whoopee! as i was bending over to land the fish, he made a last ditch attempt to escape, which was foiled thanks to the soft tip which compensated for his sudden pull. great way to end the day... last fish on the last cast and a very beautiful one! its been a while since i've seen a peacock without the barring.
that was it, this fish made my day! i pulled him up and a kind passer-by took a photo for me.
