So we started the nite fishing, waiting the currents to slow down before he bring us to his "secret spot" where just a night before, he landed a 10.7 kilo grouper, along with several kilo plus Ang Chor..
Our hopes were pretty high.. its not every night we tourist get to fish the "tradditional" way, using local knowledge and experience.. (he find his spots using the lights from shore, and occasionally by putting his ear to the wooden plank of the boat to "listen for rocks")
ANd the night slowly passes.. we changed at least 10 different spots.. All this time, the current really never slowed, although he did promise it will be 10pm..
My gal has resigned to trying her best to sleep, while not puking in the small sampan..
And soon..

10pm came and go.. and we have been onboard a little sampan, in the middle of the night, somewhere between indo, singapore, and malaysia for more than 5 hours... we did have a little bite here and there, but we didnt manage to catch anything at all.. So, my personal mission of showing the captain what our "little toys" can do failed.. and so did the captain's pride to show us how the locals do it their way... Well, in fact, the whole fleet of local sampans have blanked out.. when it was only just last night, they have boasted of good catches at the same spot.. And at 230am, with a little encouragement from my love, i reluctantly signal that its time to pack up and go home.. And we have a choice of how we go back too! To drop us at the beach of our resort, or to go back to the jetty, and drive 30minutes back to the resort.. Well, we wouldnt want to pass up the chance of being able to be ferried "home" on a boat do we? And we waved our goodbyes to the captain and our guide.. a short "not so romantic" walk on the beach, a quick shower, and we are in our beds in less than an hour, catching up on loss sleep, and dreaming of the big ang chor that never turned up....

Hey,
I believe that although the big ang chor didnt turn up but still, you all had a good time enjoying yourself in the simplicity of the place. It looks so carefree and life is so peaceful compared to the buzzing lifestyle of singaporeans. It is a perfect getaway!
Keep the photos coming.

After a day's rest, and still not over the dissapointment of blanking at Bintan, I head off to tango with MrBarra again.. Timing is just nice.. Drop my gal at shenton way at 655pm, head to spot and reach around 730pm, leave for shenton way at 10pm... Got a good two hours of luring at the rising tide.. At the risk of exposing the place, here's a picture of the bridge... Anyway, its already a very popular fishing spot... This pic is taken from BELOW the bridge, beside the potholes and lalang grass.. and the place where i stand to do my luring for the night.. Other than the endless attacks by mossies, a slight change of wind will have our senses filled with the stale scent of dried urine...

There's another fisherman fishing from on top the bridge using heavy handlines (4pcs to cover the whole stretch of the bridge) of 50lbs, and using a float and dead tamban.. He had a good fish on just the night before, but had his line busted due to the rough edges of the bridge... So there i was, casting first a small popper, then a minnow.. To cut a long story short, the minnow was taken within the fifth cast.. And what a first run MrBarra did.. Two jumps later, Mr Barra is ready to be reeled in. And as i slowly get the fish in, and trying my best not to let the other fisherman see what i caught, i edge closer to the bridge and took a picture..

ok ok, i lied... Mr Barra was lying flat on the surface, like the picture above, and i was still trying to figure how to get him out of the water, When he made a final attempt for freedom.. Now, struggling with my rod, my camera, and my heavy pouch filled with lures and pliers, i allowed him to take some line.. Thinking that i'm enjoying the run and fight anyway... And what a mistake that was... Clever MrBarra had managed to find the heavy handline with the float that was tied to the railing of the bridge, and had made a round around the line.. As i reeled in the line again, heavier now with the handline, i realise to my dismay that the handline was tied WITHOUT any slack.. and so it was.. I'm 2 meters away from a floating barra that i caught, but unable to reach it due to the hand line. Below attached is the actual picture.. the one above is cropped from this... And as i was comtemplating whether to shout for the other fisherman, and definately risk having the resdient barra's wiped out (with his fishing methods, its VERY unlikely he's a sport fisherman who's going to practise CnR), i fumbled for the camera and took this snapshot... And MrBarra was released prematurely after giving a final kick for freedom... I have lost count already.. Barra 4?: Stingray 0

On the night of 20th while we were having dinner with family, Captain Jimmy/Ah Kok called me.. "hey! we going out horsburg tomorrow night.. only 2 of us.. wanna come?" The Next Day.. After rushing thru work, and asking my gal to help prepare some maggi mee for dinner that night, i reached home at 4pm, grabbed my fishing gear, some tiger beer, the maggi noodle my love prepared for me.. I zoomed off to punggol Marina where Ah Kok and his friend jason was already waiting... "Paiseh paiseh.. "i stuttered, as i unloaded my gear onto the magnificent "SeaWolf".. Finally, a time to catch my breath and prepare my gear... As we set off for a 1hour plus journey to horsburg..

Here's my company for the night.. Captain Jimmy on the left, and Jason at the helm... At our first spot, Jason brought up this grouper, and as he was busy fishing for the next one, i "borrowed" the nice specimen and "posed" it with smiling Jimmy.. And the night was kept pretty interesting with bites every now and then, but there were no "feeding frenzy" to be had... And the current was dead slow throughout.. Quite rare for horsburg.. I managed a small Ang Chor at a wreck 2 nautical miles away from the light house..

The day's work schedule and the next day's packed schedule finally took a toll on me, and i retired to the bunk at about 530am. (a rarity for me as i normally "pa si bo chao" <die die no run>) I had a pretty decent catch already anyway. We arrived back at punggol the next morning at around 10+am, and after a quick kopi and breakfast, started to rinse down the boat. Oh well.. actually, they, rinsed down the boat.. my phone was already ringing for the appointment that i am late for, and my stomach had a pressing pain <i suspect its the semi raw eggs i had for braekfast> that had me rushing off.. Perhaps its the chinese saying "lazy people urine and shit aplenty" at work.. Anyway, here's my keep for the day..

;D
just realised that my chinese saying above " urine and s*h*i*t aplenty" had been modified to "nuts"... hmm.. quite funny to read.. for those who dont understand the saying, here's a bad attempt at Han Yu Pin Yin
"Lan ren shi niao duo" " Lazy-people-s**t-urine-many "
