Hi Folks, With thousands of flies out there, and each with hundreds of variations. No wonder some of us are confused as to what the actual patterns are. But the fish are not complaining! So, let's have a guessing game here, to see if you know all your flies... And here's the first one: and let us see the result... Cheers Qwek

BINGO!!! you got it mtshark. It is the Xmas Island Special.
The reason I chose this fly is to illustrate the variations and crossovers we come across in fly patterns. The original pattern may be a hit in it local water but may be a dud in others. Most flytyers improvised and come up with a variation that is suitable for their water and of course the fishes.
Bonefish Charlie Smith, is the creator of the Crazy Charlie Fly, still guide out from the BangBang Club in the Bahamas. The Crazy Charlie was easy to tie and successful, many variations sprung from it. Including the Gotcha and the Xmas Island Special, and many more.
The three patterns are quite close to it other, not much of a difference at all. Look at the eyes used for it pattern and the angle of the wing. Here's are the receipe for it patterns:
CRAZY CHARLIE Hook: Tiemco 811S or Dai Riki 930 sizes 2-8. Thread: 3/0 tan, white or pink. Eyes: Stainless bead chain or plated lead eyes. Body: Flashabou, tinsel or Krystal flash covered with clear mono or V-rib. Wing: Calf tail---tan, brown, pink white or yellow.
GOTCHA Hook: Tiemco 811S, 800 or Dai Riki 930, sizes 2-8. Thread: Light pink 3/0. Tail: Pearl Krystal flash or pearl mylar fibers from tubing—body length. Body: Pearl Krystal flash or Pearlescent diamond braid in pearl, pink or tan. Wing: Light tan Craft fur and two strands of yellow Krystal flash. Eyes: Stainless steel bead chain, nickel plated lead or omit.
XMAS ISLAND SPECIAL Hook: Tiemco 811S or Dai Riki 930 sizes 4-8. Thread: 6/0 or 3/0 Fl Orange or color to match body. Eyes: Stainless bead chain, gold or nickel plated lead eyes or can be omitted. Tail: Krystal Flash—Pearl, Orange, Pink, Yellow or Rootbeer. Body: Krystal flash—same color as tail. Can be reinforced with clear hard mono or V-rib. Wing: Tan Craft Fur topped with a few strands on Krystal Flash for added sparkle.
So, was it a Crazy Charlie that you fish with or was is a Gotcha or maybe it was the Xmas Island Special. Got you there. ;D ;D
Well done Edward! so let try another fly pattern.
Cheers Qwek
