Hi Guys, My fixation on rubber continues for the time being. Last weekend, I tried to tie some files that would look like a small squid. I use a Rubber Squid Head. At certain angle, they look a little like Surf Candies from Bob Popovics (especially the head). Have a look... The head was wrapped with a variety of colored mylar and tinsel so when the rubber squid head was sheathed over with the rubber, there is this colorful 3D effect over it. On this angle, they do look like surf candies. So I have decided to call this fly Sotong Candy What do you'll think? regards Alberto

Hi Alberto,
I think your rubber squid patterns looks great!!
Like you say it can look like a surf candy too, instead of using the normal epoxy head. I think its a nice alternative to the epoxy as I don't like to use epoxy as it requires much more control. The rubbers are great. Where did you get them?
I have a squid pattern too, a simpler pattern. Will post it up in my thread. Check it out.
Cheers trouty

Hi Trouty, Thanks for the compliment. I have used this fly at the GT pond last Sat and it worked. Unfortunately, I was unable to take a pic of it as the GT swallowed it till it was near the gill and Edward suggested I cut the tippet to avoid more damaged to the fish. I purchased the rubber squid head from Hock Ann down at beach rod and they are rather expensive - per pack of bout 6 pcs is $5.30 I have also seen your squid pattern on your post and the flashy material on the head is very nice as well. I have yet to start on the traditional fly patterns but your postings as well as Q is a very strong motivation for me to start. I tried to tie zonkers last week but they looked terrible. Once I get it to look decent, I post it for your comments. regards Alberto

Hi Guys, Finally manage to tie some decent zonkers last night. I realise the key to this pattern is a. Ensure that the body is properly builtup so that it has a belly like fish b. Select a proper zonker strip so that it can have the proper profile. c. Tie the rear end of the strip first before the front end (it was easier for me at least than the other way round). Here is what mine looks like The two flies looks rather different due to the size of the zonker strips that I have. The brown one is much thinner then that of the green strip which is why the fly with the green strip look much bigger and fuller. Will see how these flies fare this weekend with the PBs ;D regards Alberto

hi Al, Thanks for sharing, our local chaps are definately innovative on fly tying using different materials! Your efforts definately have paid off, the flies are improving, esp. from the earlier patterns in terms of hook to fly size ratio & a little overdressed. eg- i've tied a similar fly, pattern & proportion like your 'half & half' on a wide gap, short shank hook. Used it at the playground & had a few missed hookups, probably cos' the hook length to tail ratio was too small (1:4) Sotong Candy - very nice, did u place the plastic squid first or last, (thru the hook eye)? putting first seem to impede the tying of the rest of the fly. suggestion, -wind some lead on hook, near the eye to weight & achieve an undulating swimming variant. -The grizzly hackles are very nice & could be saved for tying some dry flies. replace them with peacock herl..esp. if using them at the destructive playground. disclaimer - they flies i tie dun even look like fly patterns, my wife use to tease me saying that those i tie look more like fallen flower petals instead.. keep posting..!.. keep 1 sotong candy for me?.. ;D weekend ahead..! cheers!

Hi Fisho, Thanks for the compliment. The squid head was placed last after everything was tied on. I will definitely keep a piece of the sotong candy for you to taste. ;D I'm trying out a charlie with wings. Looks like crap at the moment. Will post it once it starts to look decent regards Alberto

Hi Guys, Last week, I have been trying out something different. Here what they look like ;D There are cone and bead heads give it weight, tails are a pair of cock saddle on each side tied convex, the shank has leadwire underneath and then dubed with coloured dubbing material and then finally palmered with hackle. These two are the smaller ones tied of TMC Size 10 3x long shank hook for the lighter #2 and #3 weight rods. The light greyish dubbing material on the fly at the background is actually cat fur that I have collected for the past 2 years. These are the larger sizes tied on DaiIchi long shank hooks size 2 and 4. I can use these on the stiffer #3 Winston LT. I'm not sure how to name these filies - Hairy SplitTailed? regards Alberto

think i have to save up for a decent vice .... really envy u guys able to create ur own flies Hi GreatRod, Its not really the vice, but the passion Like I said at the begining of this thread, I also wanted to experience the joy of tying wierd flies and catching fish with it The Renzetti that I have is their basic entry model and a lot of people has been using that vice and never needed another. I hope that you'll join the club soon... its addictive ;D regards Alberto
