Fly Type: General Saltwater,
Target Species: General Bluewater, flats fish, anything that swims
Region Fished: Other,
Imitation: Shrimp/Prawns, baitfish
Materials Used
Hook : mustad, Size 6. The size of the hook can be varied to suit your needs. after all, you're the one tying the fly, you decide
Thread : Danville 6/0 Flat, Prewaxed, White or Clear Mono, basically any thread will do
Wing : craft fur, polar fiber, bucktail, flash and slinky, glass "n" glow, super hair, ultra hair, almost everything can be used with the first 3 being the most common.
Body : gold flashabou
tail: only if you want! i have used some midge flash in pearl
Head : Bead Chain Eyes/ dumbell eyes
The finished fly,
Tying Instructions
1) secure the hook in the vise. start the thread about 1/5 of the way down the shank from the eye and make a sort of "saddle" for the eyes to sit in
2) Tie in bead chain eyes with a figure of eight wrap
3) tie in the tail and wrap the body with material if desired. this is done by tying down the body material at the head and wrapping to the tail of the fly then all the way back, round the eyes to cover the thread then finally tying off.
4) tie in the wing of the fly. it could be the same length as the hook shank. i usually tie the wing 1 and a half times longer than the hook shank or maybe 2x. really depends. vary to suit your needs.
5) trim off access material and wrap some thread to make a nice head
6) Whip finish & epoxy or varnish the head to complete.
7) LASt AND MOST IMPORTANT STEP! GO FISHING!
Presentation Tips
cast this fly out and let it sink if the fish aren't taking the fly near the surface. this fly can be fished by twitching it on the bottom, stripping it in quick and pauses in between strips lets the fly sink a bit. this sometimes induces strikes.
catches with this pattern
