Hi folks, Great to see interest in Old Classic flies from young tiers such as Pirate. He tied an old classic from the early days way before the US of A was formed. There is A Short History of Streamer Fly Design by Lindsey Grandison at this site: www.uky.edu/~agrdanny/flyfish/muse/streamer.htmHere's a pattern that I always carry in my box and I have used it for every waters: The Soft Hackle aka Orange and Purple or the North Spider, etc. Soft Hackle Soft Hackle flies is an impressionistic pattern. The soft hackle represents the legs and wings of a subsurface insect, but it is the movement in these flies that make them work. Here a link about the history of the soft hackle flies. There are also books on these patterns as well. business.virgin.net/british.classic/spider-marchbrown.htmlBeside the soft hackle, there are some old classic that I also carry in my box; the Micky Finn and the Black Nose Dace. Will share info on those as well. Cheers Qwek

Hi Q, This is indeed a classic!
My favorite is the Partridge & Orange and its one of the flies that I learned from Huns. It accounted for quite a few trout when I was fishing with him in Nippon and the PBs in our home waters as well.

Hi Alberto, This is one classic fly that I alway have in my box and here the catch with this fly on my 1wt and a new furled leader fused directly to the flyline. What a Classic! Took me quite a while to reel it in on a 4lbs tippet, just the two of us and a few tommies lurking around for breakfast, on a cold wet Sunday morning. The barometer was dropping too. After the kodak moment and releasing it gently back into the waiting jaws of tommies, surprisingly none come in for a bite, I snipped off the fly and packed before the hour was up. What a morning. Eddie, you need to buy a new alarm clock. ;D Cheers Qwek

Hi Q, To catch an elephant, you must have been using one of your new pattern called the "peanut fly".
Truly a beautiful specimen you have there Q ;D

Hi guys, North country spiders are still used regularly in the UK, but as the name suggests the northern end where I'm from. A good friend of mine Tony Downing did some great articles on this type of tying for me on practicalfly. Hope you enjoy them, they fascinated me. Part OnePart TwoPart ThreePart FourIan Akers
