Heello
anyone out there have an illustration or any easy method in learning the double haul??
Agent X had tried to teach me before....but he say my hands like legs...got coordination problem...hahahahaha
I do have casting videos but they make it look so easy...
As previously I fished in rivers n streams so distance is not of main concern but more delicate casting n presentation....
But fishing in saltwater places is different...u get strong winds and all that...and a double haul is good for achieving distances....
I do not have much time to practice it either which i hope too but can't....sometimes I can only like fish every 3-6 months when i'm on holiday....other days from where i reside can't get to a fishing hole yet...
thanx trouty

Hello Trouty,
I'm not much of a caster, in fact I cast terribly away from water, ie on the field. Henry even teased me that I'm like a fish out of water. What I can share is my experience and how to overcome them.
I used to have bad hands coordination too, till I watched a video on casting. The tip is to keep the line-hand at your side by the hip and try not to bring the line-hand up to meet your rod-hand. If you do, you will find that as the line-hand reaches up, the line starts to slack. By keeping the line-hand by your side, it load the line as you backcast. Once the rod travel past your shoulder, tuck your line-hand down. Or simply straighten your line-hand and let your line-hand "spring" back to the original position. Do the same as for your forward cast. This way I find that I can progress to moving my line-hand up to meet my rod hand with ease.
Hope this help.
Cheers Qwek

Heello Trouty ( with a nick like yours - what flyangler can resist casting a line at your direction eh ? ;D) From my personal nightmares with DH, I strongly believe the easiest way to learn the DH is to start off on a Ultra-Heavy wt rod ( 8wt or above ) - as opposed to Light wt rods DH is much easier to learn from ' feel ' than from coordination ( my coordination's perfect - is that bloody soft rod of mine that wouldn't give me the feeling to apply it ) No doubt, Agent Orange ( just kidding ;D) X , must have highlighted Lefty's 5 principles for Righty casting to you - which you must always adhere to, when casting Anyways - have a browse below..... www.sexyloops.com/beginners/doublehaulbasic.shtmlwww.sexyloops.com/flycasting/doublehaul.shtml ....and let us know how you get on ? Bearing in mind that you must always keep your wrist locked during the strokes ( Paul's an expert - he can afford to break his wrist by compensating on his stroke, beginner's on the other hand - shouldn't ) and that the stroke is exactly identical to the stroke you would use - when you answer the phone in a rush ie. you must stop the stroke HARD when your hand reaches your ear ( as seen in Paul Arden's .gif ) With that ' abrupt stop' - you 'll feel the line prompting your left hand to position required to perform the second haul and eventually - delivery Hope this have confused you as much as it has, me May you feel the ' Force '...... of the line tugging on your left hand ;D

Hi Trouty , Unlike the two bros above ( one lightweight another heavyweight ), I'm no expert but here's how I picked up the DH... from reading and applying Lefty's instructions 1) First lay out 25ft of line on the field. Then do a backcast and at the moment you do the speed up and stop tug the line with your left hand (if you are a righty) straight downwards parallel to the plane of you cast and way from the rod ( preferably the spine of the rod) in a very short but fast stroke and release the line once the rod stops at the backcast. 2) The line will suddenly accelerate and shoot backwards. Just let the line straighten on the lawn before commencing on the forward cast in the same manner. 3) You may find this easier at first if it is a side cast instead of an overhead cast. But as you go along, the overhead is the most efficient cos you can use your abdominal muscles to control the loaded rod. The hand is quite weak and cant control too much aerialised line. proper line conrol with an 'o' too shoot out line is also very important a smooth stroke is a must. We tend to DH all the time once we pick it up and become lazy/inefficient casters. Henry always reminds me to be aware of the single hand casting stroke and only use the Dh for more distance. Goodluck! Cheers CY
