Fly Fishing and Pollution.
If we calculate the square area of our squeeky clean fly line, leader tippet and fly that is in contact with the water in the reservoir and compare it with the with the square area of a canoe or kayak, I think we are still better where pollutants are measured.
If we compare a few quiet fly fishermen stalking a fish and a few canoes cow-peh-cow-booing as they paddle in the water, we're still better where noise disturbance is concerned.
But why are they allowed to enter the waters in a reservoir while we Fly Fishermen get hunted down by the rangers whenever we just step a little bit off the line.
I hope someone with more knowledge can answer this question.
No, not to go against the authorities. (It is stupid and suicidal)
But to see what we are not doing right to gain our rightful shares in our rights to enjoy what the rowing clubs are enjoying at our reservoirs.
Afterall, we are all paying taxes too for the maintenance of the reservoirs and parks too.
And we want them, PUB and NPark, to answer why.

Are Fly Fishermen capable of causing this? At MacRitchie Reservoir. I was there to watch the lampans. Not fishing, not feeding the fish. I just sat there and watch. Can a fly line do this? Can 50 fly lines do this? An eye sore for any visitor to the park. I'll leave you with some better pictures to cure that eye sore.

think that is done by those kayakers.. the reservoir was neva like that until they came along, as far as i can remember. best part is that those ****ing !)!)+ kayakers paddle into fishing ground and jus kayak around here and there and dun give a **** about us fishos and we cant even go into their "own" area meant for kayaking to release fish.plus.. the current fishing ground has almost no space to back cast as 1 there is not enough space and 2, there is too much human traffic. and to all fly fishos, dun let anyone try to brush u off ur spot, jus tell the guy to go fly kite or read the sign board cuz mac does allow fly fishing (happened to me 4 ppl came up to me and KPKB).
tight lines!

Those black streaks looked like oily stuff. It could come from a number of sources. The exhaust from maintenance boats, grease found on the buoy-markers chains and ropes, the kayaks, lunch boxes, fast food packages etc. Lets not speculate that it is from the kayaks alone. We can be sure only if we take some samples and send it to the lab for tests. An Ren, if the paddlers give you problems like shouting at you, I would suggest you write to the PUB about it. Then cc the email to NPark, the Singapore Canoe Federation and the Singapore National Olympic Council, for maximum effect. Please do not let the shouting match aggravate into violence. The best is to LL and move away. Confrontation with the paddlers should be the last resort. After all, if suggestions to the PUB to rent the canoes from Paddle Lodge to Fly Fish is implemented, we still need the canoes. Who knows, we might get some paddlers to take up fly fishing too.

Hi BT , I cant figure out how kayaks can pollute like that... unless they have on-board dunny ;D... anyway, IMHO its not about kayaks against flyers cos we may need to use kayaks in future due to our 'backcast problem' .... hmm maybe we should all brush up (or LEARN in my case ) our roll-casts ;D! An Ren .. flyfishing ( or fishing ) is known as ' the gentle art' in civilized circles... we only use disguised expletives on our buddies ;D!... start catching fish after the kayaks have just left and you've really mastered the art ..... in some streams, flyers can only fish upstream cos wading is considered to be berleying .. go figure ;D Pollution is inevitable in S'pore cos we still have pollutive industries ( ppl staying out west can tell you stories about acid rain ), we still wash cars out on the street, we still bbq at every green spot possible, we basically pour anything into the drain cos its convenient... y'get the picture The solution in other developed countries is to restore the wetlands around industrial areas and even beside the streets so that wetland plants, insects, fish and bacteria can breakdown the toxins/wastes. But we will have people who complain about 'jungles' and 'mosquitoes' ( BTW aedes is a domesticated mossie that cant survive in acidic bog conditions) and who will prefer to have naturally dead monsoon drains that basically bring the problem quicker from the pollutive source to our water catchment .... golf courses and other turf areas have taken over most of the wetlands.... thats just too bad. Maybe someone with more knowledge in environmental science should advise the management on how to take the longer but smarter route to clean-up this H2O resource instead of trying to 'filter away' the problem ( thereby using more fuel) Its a hard cause BT especially all the 'nature' that locals recognise is manicured lawns and pruned trees. Nparks even remove epiphytes from trees cos they look 'untidy' and may drop on some vehicle.... well nobody wants to be iced by an orchid I suppose ;D Anyway, if this 'clean-up n kill nature' mentality keeps on going, we can forget about a large flying ant hatch and kalui frenzies.... sigh Cheers CY

Its a hard cause BT especially all the 'nature' that locals recognise is manicured lawns and pruned trees........ Every journey begins with a small step. We'll have to take this small step one at a time to try to educate the NPark and PUB that we, Fly Fishermen are also concerned with the environment. There is an organisation called GreenPeace I think. Used illegal methods against people who are damaging the environment. But they later got the support of governments also. They too begin in small brave steps. We need to educate the authorities too, with small brave steps. And hope that there are people knowledgable and sensible enough in NPark and PUB to also make a brave step to give us some slacks.
