What do you all think? If the white paper goes through and PUB agrees to our proposal of C&R policy, do you think the majority of the other local fishermen will be happy or angry? I know where most of the members of this forum stand. But I suspect we may be the minority..... Check out this thread on FK : www.fishingkaki.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=59639 pages worth of discussion and still going strong. Either way, there's no turning back........ Back to writing part 2 of the paper.

Hi TY, A good topic. Unfortunately from the FK posts, I cannot understand the majority of local anglers .... It is either the local anglers are dumb (pardon that) or we think that they are dumb by discussing a topic without a common sense solution in mind that both allows exciting fishing as well as protection of waters...I'm already into the idea of ' managing the water and CnR first and probably thinning out the additional stock with fishing 'seasons'. Once the 'balance' is established ie ' number of fish required to balance an ecosystem', strictly CnR or bag limits depending on which system actually works better. For quick breeding fish like tilapia, catch limits/size limits ( keeping small ones) may be the best solution while for arrowanas, the opposite may be true. My point is not to have pure 'put in museum' conservation but management and care of waters to make it a balanced, clean and populated eco-system. CnR is only part of this role of 'guardian of waters', the rest is actually tougher including licensing, upgrading eco-sytems by planting/breeding aquatic life, promoting the fine art of angling with more 'selective' and less polluting methods eg flyfishing etc. Lets be both scientific and artistic about fishing and go for something fun and fulfilling. Cheers CY

The question of Catch & Release has been on going ever since FK was a forum. New fishing kakis who discover the forum join and bring up the subject and the heated discussions continue. These discussions will conclude temporarily and when a new guy comes alone, and give his comments, the debate will start all over again.
Operation Liberty was started to created the awareness of Catch & Release. There are many in FK(in my opinion, the majority) who are practising Catch & Release. We just have to wait for the others to catch up with us.
The other point is, education.
We have to become involve in spreading the messages of Catch & Release and join the leaders and organisers of Operation Liberty and help educate, convince and bring on board those who are not yet practising Catch & Release.
We need to give Catch & Release more exposure in the all media so that the message is spread loud and clear.
Fishingkaki forum and Operation Liberty has started the ball rolling. There were Catch & Release articles published in The New Papers and Rod and Line recently. We just need to reinforce those ideals and help spread the message.
Maybe start a full scale campaign garmen style to creat more awareness.
If we are determine to do it, step by step, little by little, we have a very good chance to succeeding because Singaporeans are intelligent fishermen and they know our resources are limited.
Many years down the road, when the stubborn "ah laus" tao pao kings die, their kind will become extinct, and fishing and catch & Release will be the order of the day.

My view is that the majority are unaware of the impact on their fishing routine once the white papers goes thru. From the numbers of signatures collected, I suspected that half are from our community which in whole represents maybe less than 5% of the total fishing community in Singapore. Either the rest are not aware or they don't care. I think John has run out of definitions for the word "selfish".
Most of them think that C&R is akin to advocating that C&K has no place in recreational fishing in Singapore. Its will be a long long time to come that they understand that the scale of C&K will have to be cut back tremendously from today's level.
I also agree with you that indiscriminate C&K that we see happening today is not part of the answer.
This remind me of the "hello Kitty" incidents at MacDonald's outlets. I think even with the introduction of bag limit, there will be ways for them to skirt the limits. I will not be surprise to see C&K fishermen running back home or to their cars to empty the bags and go back for a top-up.
TY, push ahead with your part 2. The time is now and the future maybe too short for another cast.
My $2.50 worth.
Cheers Qwek

TY, push ahead with your part 2. The time is now and the future maybe too short for another cast. My $2.50 worth. Cheers Qwek Hi guys and TY, What Qwek said is so true and the time is now to take action to push ahead. Just reading through 9 page of bickering on C&R on the FK forum shows that there will be no ready and easy answer to this dilemma. Billy recommendation's of education may be the only logical one. My own personal experience. I used to fish a lot at the Pasir Ris C&R pond. I'll spend at least one to two hours twice a month to fish to my heart content with debarbed circle hook so to minimize damage to the fish. When so people hear that I pay $40 to release the fish back into the pond, the usual retort or remark would be "Siao ah, you very rich ha! Got fish dun take back! Dont wan give me la!" Remember that this is a pay pond and not the reservoir. Or its hard for their minds to comprehend that I'll pay money to fish and not want to take any back to eat or give away. Even on normal boat trip on local waters, small fishes get released back, and I get flak from my friend for doing so. Maybe that's why I don't fish with them that much anymore. I have been ready and practice C&R for a long time, and will preach this message to anyone and everyone. If you want to eat fish ... go to the market and buy regards Alberto

This is just the 'Kiasu" mentality of a typical Singaporean. But on my boat I always encourage them nicely that if everyone takes everything, sooner or later everything will runs out. So I always tell them that they take 1 or 2 fishes to eat and realease the rest. Now some of them are actually doing it. I think we also have to be patient to educate these ppl and sooner or later they will learn.

Hi there fly fishermen,
With all due respect, I thought the white paper was meant for the whole of the angling community in Singapore. We should not advocate just on C&R alone...... we need to include bag/size limit too..... as there are two "school of thoughts" fishermen out there.
My view is that, as long as the fishery management program goes through, having the bag/size limit, it should be sustainable.
Of course, we hope the day will come when all fishermen practice C&R ........ until that day comes, we cannot deny them of their so called "fun". We have to gradually inculcate fishermen with C&R programmes.
Limit your kill, Don't kill your limit !

My dear bros, what Hun said it right we should enforce bag and size limit first then educate them slowly. Otherwise nobody will accept what we are doing.

It may be a good idea to get tackle shops to help us stop glorifying "deckfull of dead fish" photoes too!
