Hi Folks,
Just returned from a 1week overseas trip and had a phone conversation with SFAS this morning.
SFAS received a phone call from PUB last Fri (28 Oct) asking for help to do a workshop/exhibition at Bedok Res on 5 & 6 Nov as part of their "Clean & Green" activity.
The Guest of Honor will be the Prime Minister on 5th Nov.
Fred (assisted by Yu Hock) will be participating in in a booth just beside the fishing jetty.
I need to emphasize that this is NOT for the anouncement for the opening of Bedok Res. That will be for another later date.
This event is for PUB to publicise the benefits of conservation and ownership of water resources through recreational activities.
I think we the local fly fishing community should grab hold of this opportunity to publicise our advocation. Especially in this case where the PM will be there.
The 2 ideas that we need to sell are :
1. Catch & Release to sustain fishing resources 2. Fly fishing is a wholesom and conservation minded activity.
I think the C&R message had been well registered by PUB.
The key message that we need to emphasize on is about Fly Fishing. Nothing heard yet on my proposal paper on permitting fly fishing at Bedok Res. so this would be a special interest item for us.
Here is what we need : VOLUNTEERS TO SUPPORT AND HELP FRED & YU HOCK AT THEIR BOOTH!
Timing is 9am to 6pm. Take note that access will be limited from 9am to 10am on 5th Nov because of Prime Minister's presence so it'll be a good idea to let Fred & Yu Hock do their part and show up after 10am on Sat.
Any takers?
(Billy, can you make this post a sticky anouncement?)
Thanks.

Hi TY, Thanks for the kind words, we really need more supporters for this event. Just to highlight some points, YH and I are involved as we are part of "TeaM Rapala" and we are suppose to have a talk on intro to lure fishing and C&R practice. After talking to YH, I feel that someone need to represent the fly fishing community to let the VIPs and the public know that fly fishing is a wholesome and safe activity. I think Michael Boey from Coho is involved too. I suggest that TY to be part of the team that will represent the fly fishing community and also to sell the idea of C&R. We will have to quickly speak to SFAS about this intention. Just my thoughts for consideration

Hi TY, After talking to YH, I feel that someone need to represent the fly fishing community to let the VIPs and the public know that fly fishing is a wholesome and safe activity. Hi Fred, my thoughts exactly if we want to increase the chance of the fly fishing proposal paper getting approved by PUB. I had a chat with Chin this morning and he does not seem to object to this. It'll be worthwhile to get SFAS's support. Qwek, any chance of getting a pre-picnic team going?

Hi TY, Great to hear that. We are most happy to have you around during the carnival. If Chin is agreeable, let us not waste this golden opportunity. YH is certainly most keen to help out for the fly fishing community as well. It is not a problem for me to handle the Lure Fishing portion. We need also need to educate the public on the virtues of C&R and I feel that you are the best person to do it. We want to have the same line of thoughts as the proposal that was submitted to PUB. If I am not wrong, the NEA, PUB people will be around that day, so it is again another good chance to show our keen interest in this area.

Glad to be of help as far as providing recreational information and know-how to the general public. Nevertheless, I may have some restrictions when dealing with the VIPs as a representative of any organization due to the nature of my profession, hope you guys would understand. Qwek and the gang will need to do the honor. I'll be available from 9am to 12pm, then from 2pm till 4pm. It'll be good if our local fly fishing community has a maximum turn out to illustrate to PUB is we are a sizable community. That will put a lot of weight on the fly fishing proposal paper. I appeal for support!

Thanks Uncle Wong and Albert!
Here are more details :
Sat, 5 Nov, 9am to 11am : This is a closed VIP only session. PM will be there. PUB had limited SFAS to only 5 people in the booth. This will comprose of 3 SFAS appointment holders plus team Rapala (Fred & Yu Hock). The exhibits will be determined by SFAS and Team Rapala. As PUB had yet to approve my fly fishing proposal paper, fly fishing will not be the main theme of the exhibits. Nonetheless, SFAS assured me that there will be some fly fishing related exhibits.
Sat 11am onwards : This session will be open to the public. I spoke to Mike and Coho had graciously agreed to participate with fly fishing related exhibits. Key point is to show PUB that there is a sizable fly fishing community in Singapore so that the fly fishing proposal paper will stand a much better chance.
See you there!

Hi guys, anything that a bystander can do to help too.. We're all fly fishermen too. Turn up at the SFAS and Rapala booth and show our support by making up the numbers. Better still, bring your friends and their friend and crowd out the area to show the PUB the huge number of fishermen.
