:'(Its a very sad thing I heard today. and if nothing gonna be done soon, there would not be any fish left for any fishing programe. My friend went down to Bedok Reservoir to recce and counted 9 out of 10 ppl fishing there were using baits. As you know all baits fisherman are sure to Tar Pow their catch! Now I am sitting at home wondering how are we gonna educate this people. Its sad.
Last week, I was there and 2 boys told me it was open already.
I saw they had a bag of bread with them to use as baits.
I hou-lian my micro charlie and caught a fingerling.
Then showed them how to fish it.
I gave each of them a crazy charlie with sinker and clips swivels, leader etc.
The fly spinning set up and taught them how to fly-spin.
One boy gave up the rig after a while and changed to a lure.
The other kept spinning and caught a peacock bass.
But before he could bring it in, the pb unhook itself and escaped.
He said,"Uncle very good leh. Where to buy har?"
I told him Coho.
I also told him if he C&R, I'll give him more flies.
Seem to work.
I hit an idea after your post Jim.
Lead sinkers are very cheap and I can add the clips and swivels .................. etc.
We can all tie charlies.
Then put the whole set-up into a small packages
with the fly spinning instructions.
We go to these people and offered the set up rig to them and teach them how to spin-fly.
Forget the old ones and ah laus.
Start with the kids.
If we go around telling, " Eh! No bait fishing."
People will just tell you to FO.
But if we give them the spin-fly rig and the instructions
in a nice package, I think they will be more receptive to us.
When we have gain their trusts, we can show them that flies can also catch fish.
Then we can "preach" our C&R ideas to them.
I would also suggest we don't de-barb these charlies yet.
The kid who lost the fish was a bit disappointed.
I told him the fly hook was de-barbed and he said "Aiya...."
Maybe we should leave the barb there and let these
people get poisoned with flies first and then suggest to them to de-barb the hook when they are catching fish with more confidence.
Any body want to donate flies?
Old/used ones also can.
I will go and get the sinkers and plastic bags.
Like everybody said.
No use only talk.
Lets just show them how it is done.
And I think they will be happy too to know that fly-spinning works.
