Fish - On! Shishidome Fly Fishing Area.
Located in the highlands of Yamanashi Prefecture in the township of Tsuru, this Trout Fly Fishing Area is surrounded by beautiful mountain range.
It's the month of November and the weather is getting colder by the day with air temperature of 16C.
This is the map layout of the Shishidome Fishing Ground. A rather large playground for fishermen to cover within one day.
You can stay the night in this lovely Holiday Lodge. You can have your meals in the restaurant, take a relaxing Hot Bath and retire the night in the cozy rooms and be in time for the early morning trout rise.
This is the Trout pond for Fly & Lure fishermen. You will find Rainbow, Brown, Brook and Char in this clear water pond.
The upper section of the stream is where one would find the Yamame and Iwana - these are wild native species. This section is strictly for fly fishing only.
The mid stream section are stocked with Rainbow, Brown and Iwana.
A close up look at one of the pools......... that's where the trouts are playing! This stream will lead you to the Water Fall - what a beautiful sight!
Another close up look at one of the pools at the lower section of the stream. Rainbow, Brown and Char thrives in this clear running waters.
The Pine Lake - Kawasemi
This is where huge trouts are being caught. A very peculiar way of operating schedules - for Fly fishing, it is only available on odd number dates and Lure Fishing on even number dates. Everyday, only 35 fishermen get to wet their lines in this trout infested lake!
This is the Cabin at Pine Lake. It houses the office, the cafe, shower rooms, toilets and Dry room.
The man in charge giving a briefing.
Free flow of coffee and Tea at the counter for those fishing at the lake.
Shower room
Dry room
This shots were taken early in the morning at 6:30am.
I began lengthening line as the landscape slowly took back its colors from the night. With long tippets and tiny dries knotted on, I walked around the lake in search of the huge trout.
On this trip I had with me the SCL 3wt married with the M.5SL and the Orvis Frequent Flyer Fly 5wt matched with the M2SL. Both the Bauer reels were loaded with SA Stillwater Intermediate Weight Forward tapered fly line.
Initially I felt some skepticism of how the SCL rod would perform and was fearful that it would not hold up to those huge bruisers. Well, all doubts evaporated like an early morning fog after I landed my first catch of the day - a beautiful 70cm rainbow trout with my good old trusty CDC dry fly.
Every fly fishermen will be issued with a landing rubber net and you are not permitted to place the trout on the gravel for photo taking - that's why all my catch photos were taken from the landing net.
On a few occasions I was into backing when the big trout headed off like a south bound train ....... swimming to deeper water as I hold on tight to my SCL - I was as happy as a pig in mud! My largest trout on the SCL was a fine rainbow of 78cm!
Two hours later, it was time for me to draw first blood with my Orvis FFF 5wt rod. Just bought it few weeks ago and thought today would be a good day to pop the cherry!
A Brown trout
The rises would be quiet and delicate but the bulges beneath them would suggest a fish big enough to move a gallon of water with its back!
A Brown trout
As the hour pass, they (trout) quickly learn to tell the difference between real insects and forgeries! However, I did managed to land a couple of trouts on my "Machigai Nai" deceiver before switching back and forth to my CDCs. My largest trout on the Orvis FFF 5wt was a rainbow of 74cm on a size 15 CDC Orange dry fly.
A simple set lunch for the fishermen
You guys must be wondering by now what I was talking about - how do you dry fly with a SA Stillwater Intermediate fly line huh?
Well, it's quite simple once you get the hang of it. Just haul the dry fly forward and let it rest/sit on the water surface until the Intermediate line submerged totally with the fly. Start stripping the fly line slowly as the fly stay suspended in mid water......... in no time a trout will be tugging at the end of your line.
Hope to be fishing with you soon,
