Hi BOBs,
Calviello Jaguar Bipower 3/2 ¡®The Little Marcus¡¯
This rod started off as pure idea and as in all good ideas, it began to take on a life of its own. Marcelo was volunteering to raise funds for Banjo¡¯s forum and wanted to know the ideal rod to represent the forum. I posted that I¡¯d love a jaguar flamed bi-power rod with clear wraps and he jumped on the idea and made one immediately¡ which also sold almost immediately.
But I didn¡¯t have the funds then to purchase another rod and took to scrimping another good 6 months before ordering it mid last year. The next few months saw us discussing the rod design as I wanted it to be a wood gripped special edition, a 3 piece for portability plus good line pick-up, secure ferrules for canoe fishing, and corrosion resistant hardware for saltwater¡ a pretty long list of demands for a bamboo rod but I stuck at it and Marcelo managed to built it from exquisitely flamed cane to delicately knurled hardware.
Just as he was about to deliver it, I was just noticing how my son Marcus was growing up into a very observant fan of the finny race. He could rattle off scientific names of 10 species easy and was very into casting too. Then I noted with a laugh while checking the Net that the name Marcelo translated to ¡®Little Marcus¡¯. My son actually shared the same name as the rodmaker! Quite amazing. Marcelo was also tickled by the coincidence and we both christened the rod ¡®the Little Marcus¡¯.
Marcelo did a nice video casting the rod and after some weeks, I had it on my lap in all its glory. Intricate flaming on alternate flats, vermillion wraps made mirror smooth yet transparent in Marcelo¡¯s citrus scented varnish, highly figured wood grip matched with Marcelo¡¯s custom hardware. The beauty of the rod was blinding to say the least!

Pictured with the sister Calviello jaguar flame that is still going strong
I fished the rod the very weekend first with dry flies where it casted close up to 80ft with nary an bend to the butt. The fish were spooky and the 6wt line didn¡¯t help. The next day I fished streamers and hooked up a few feisty Peacock Bass that were certainly overpowered by this canon. Hopefully, Marcus will be able to fish this rod soon and we can take it to saltwater and jungle river trips. After all, Marcus is a tough yet beautiful boy and the rod is much the same.
Thanks Marcelo!
