Hi folks,
As you know that the Marina Barrage is in construction and soon we will have a freshwater reservior. Fishing were the norm before the construction, and many of us have enjoys wetting our lines along the rivers banks of Singapore and Kallang. Of late, the men in the blue and white trucks have been very active soliciting for our IC.
One of our commercial affiliate had been booked for standing along the river bank with his trusty rod (unassembled). He had his picture taken and booked for fishing. Many of us like SW were puzzled of to why fishing is not allowed along the the two rivers. SW was told men that came in the blue and white truck that fishing causes pollution in the rivers that will be our future fresh water supplies.
But nothing is said of the amount of rubbish dumped and washed into the rrives form the pubs and eateries. The peeing and vomitting that goes unnoticed by the men that goes home at night with their blue and white trucks.
And fishing is bad.
Here is my post in the FK on a similar incident that happened to one of the fishing kakis. I think at one time or another, it happened to all of us.
Kena chaes away: www.fishingkaki.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=113263Let me share some of my encounters with the men that came in the blue and white truck and some over zealous men from the public.
I was around Zouk to recce one saturday morning with my flyrod and gear, a guy came up to me and flash his batch at me and said "PUB". I pointed toward Zouk and said, "the pub is closed already, come back tonight."
PUB man flashing batch again: "no no, I am from PUB".
Me: "OK, let me see that batch again"
PUB man: "here" as he push it close to my face. But he pull it away as I reached out to take it.
PUB man: "why you want batch, no anyhow take ok"
Me: "Are you the person in that picture on the card?"
PUB man: "yes yes, of course if not cannot anyhow carry one"
Me: "I want to call the number listed on your card to verify your identity"
PUB man: "no need, I from PUB" as he flashed his batch again
Me: "ok, then get lost" I then packed up my rod and stuff and walk toward Grand Corpthone coffeehouse and sit down. I don't want to walk back to my vehicle for him to id.
He stopped short of following me into the hotel. He has no rights to detain me or ask for my particulars and I don't have to comply.
I expected him to call the police, so I waited. None turned up so I split the scene.
A couple of years back, I was told to leave the area behind Fulllerton Building. A hotel staff came up to tell me that I was on private property. I told the guy that concrete pathway along the river bank leads me to this place and there is neither gate or sign to tell me that I had trespassed onto private property. The hotel guy, with a towel over his shoulder to cover his name tag told me that their tables and chairs are placed along the passageway. I told him to call his manager to talk to me, he told me that the manger was not in and insisted that I am on private property. I said ok, showed me the government gazzette to state that this is private property and also showed me signs. I couldn't see any and I not sure if there are any. This is to call his bluff. He then walked into the hotel and I moved along to avoid further problem.
When I first started flyfishing, i used to go to LP in the evenings after works because it not crowded by that time. Many time, the rangers there willl politely tell us not to flyfish there and we will packed up and moved on.
One evening, as I was walking back toward the carpark. A PUB man came up to me and said that I was fishing in the illegal area. I told that I'm on the road leading to the carpark, so how can I be fishing. He claimed that I was earlier, I countered back and asked him where I was fishing. He just pointed there toward the fishing ground and said that I am carrying a fishing rod.
I told him that he came from the carpark and can see me fishing over the rise. He said the evidence is in my hands, the fishing rod. I said ok, what are you going to do. He demanded for my IC, if not he will called the police. By then, a crowd had gathered around to see the commotion. I said I ok go ahead and call the police. He said just give him my IC and he will not called the police. I told him I will not give him any thing and I will call the police if he dare not. He looked surprise, and said; "you call the police, for what".
I said: "I am going to report you to the police for trying to rape me." He was shocked then: "what I try to rape you" I said "Yes, you also have the evidence on you" He shouted "what evidence! don't anyhow say or I sue, i got witness around you know" pointing to the crowd that has gathered around us. I pointed toward his groin, "there, you have the necessary tool to rape me, right" He shouted "Hey, don't be funny ok. He will fishing because you are carrying this fishing rod" I told him not to waste my time and called the police immediately if not I will. He told me I cannot anyhow accused people of rape because of his race.
Sorry, if I offend any one here.
I told him it not because of his race but of his manners, or rather lack of. I asked him can he proved that I was fishing, even I was carrying a fishing rod. Can he prove that was my intention. Some of us like to practise casting and I not sure if that is against any parks rulings.
He told me not to be cocky and prayed that he do not catch me again. I asked him if he was threatening me, but he marched off to his van.
Many time, I was stopped by rangers and PUB staffs and I stopped fishing the moment they appeared or asked me to (stop). I had even stopped and turned to help a ranger who had fallen while climbing a railing to catch us. Another time to help pull in PUB boat that got into trouble when they were travelling toward me to stop me fishing. I always give them my particulars when politely requested and many of them are very nice gentlemen. They are just performing their duties. For some, it the power of the uniforms that engross them. Like those carkpark vultures.
Coming back to fishing along Singapore and Kallang rivers, I not sure if there are any signs prohibiting fishing. Some of friends had been stopped and were told fishing polluted the water. What about the pubs alongs the river banks the current construction works, the fireworks displays that dropped tons of debris into the bay. Every drains along these rivers, flow into them and carried with them the rubbish, vomit and pees from the night revelries.
Look like the vision of the rivers is different from what it was 40 years ago. Or could it be that the men that came in the blue and white trucks have different view from our MM.
On 27 Feb 77, at the opening of the Upper Pierce Reservoir, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew stressed the urgent need to conserve water in Singapore where water sources are limited and many of the watercourses polluted. He said, " It should be a way of life to keep the water clean, to keep every stream, every culvert, every rivulet, free from unnecessary pollution. The Ministry of Environment should make a target: in ten years let us have fishing in the Singapore River and fishing in the Kallang River. It can be done."

Fishing is a sign that the water is healthy.
