Not so favourable reply from MCYS
=====================================
Hi Mr Tan Yik,
I've had the opportunity to look at your framework proposal in greater
detail and have a couple of questions which you might be able to help
answer. Firstly, given that 'sport' fishing is not recognised as a sport
in Singapore, how would your proposal fit into our overall sporting
framework and vision? And secondly, since fishing is not recognised as a
sport in Singapore, how would my Ministry and the Singapore Sports Council
(SSC) be able to play a role in promoting this activity?
While I do not disagree with you on the merits of promoting 'sport'
fishing, I must say I do disagree that its a 'sport'. I look at it as an
outdoor activity and hobby, though I am sure that the individuals engaged
in it take it seriously. But I trust you would understand that we
recognise a sport as a sport if they are included in any of the four major
Games - South East Asian, Asian, Commonwealth, Olympics.
On the use of our reservoirs, I will leave it to Cheng Yap from the
Ministry of Environment & Water Resources (MEWR) to comment as it falls
under his Ministry's purview. I've copied him in this email as well as my
colleagues Eugene and Addy from the SSC.

This is my reply to them :

Hi Edwin,
Thank you for your email.
The term "sports Fishing" was used colloquially to reflect a specific attitude to rules and regulations of responsible fishing activities. While Sports Fishing may not necessarily involve competition, the quality of sportsmanship is no less valued in our circumstance.
Nevertheless, my context of writing to the Minister of MCYS was premised on the value of sport fishing as an avenue for Community Development. Creation of a good fishing environment and a committed fishing community will, in our opinion, foster socially responsible individuals and inculcate a caring and active community in Singapore.
If this subject matter does not fall under the purview of your department, we will appreciate if you could provide a more relevant reference within MCYS.
Thanks You & Best Regards
Tan Yik
