Er...guys...I do agree there is some truth to this guy's claims but I thought he should use a nicer approach to explain. Try imagine someone like Neverenuf gets lipped on a boga on land, it must be a terrible experience for his neck and jaws if his lips do hold. Fishes are normally exposed to a lesser pull of gravity (underwater) than on land. When we land them, THEIR internal organs are not designed to handle land gravity. While I think lipping small fish of 5lb should be okay in general, but on heavier fish, the pull of gravity might be too much for their internal organs and mighht kill them. It will be a shame if a good fish dies this way. Boga is a good tool to hold toothy critters while unhooking in the water and also serve as a weighing scale at times. But I have personally tore some Milkfish lips real bad. I am sure some of the forummers here experienced this before too. I remember reading somewhere that tailing Salmon may also paralzed them due to broken spinal cord or something like that. I am sure most of us here uses boga on fishes with TLC to get a quick reading and send them back. We are cool

Hi YH,
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I must agree that most damages to fish lifted with a lip grip are mostly torned lips or dislocated jaws. Yes it is a shame to kill the fish this way. Guess we are wiser now on how to hold the fish for a Kodak moment.
But I think gavity in and out of the water are the same, it the buoyancy that is different for salt and fresh water. Most fish in the water (fresh or salt) have their body structure support by water, a medium that is very different from the air in which we move about. Thus when out of the water the fish is no longer support by the isthmus–a cartilaginous bundle of ligaments that connects the head and body--and the fish will die a slow death from starvation.
I also agree that neverenuff should use a nicer approach to explain than to come with all guns blazing from the hip. Maybe he trying to impart or impose his master teaching on us. Try manners first.
Anyway, thanks for sharing YH.
Cheers Qwek

Yes Master Q, you are right that buoyancy has a big part too. I was reading how astrounaut use water to train for their mission and that gives me some analogy..will some miss and hit but you know wat I mean. I think one of the reasons Dan Blanton Proboard is so successful is tat it discourages anonymity. Dan is one helluva moderator to stick to his rules...

Dan is one helluva moderator to stick to his rules... 67er, I don't disagree with the concept of transparency in forums such as this. There are a number of Australian sites where you need to log on as a real person or risk banishment, however in Australia you can freely vent your piece of mind on any medium and tell a politician what you really think of his party's policies. On my last day in your fair city I witnessed an old bloke get knocked down by a car, not serious, but the gentleman was shaken ...... what really surprised me were the number of card "citizens with authority" that materialised out of the shadows to take charge of the situation and control traffic flow. ...... in some things anonymity is a blessing

Ladies & Gentlemen, Lets put this to rest.
I firmly believe in Freedom of Expression, lively debate and discussion is always encouraged in this board so long as the presenter does not shove his point of view or opinion down someone throat.
Like I said before, flame throwers have seldom be deployed here and I and know that it will not become the norm as well.
I recently read in another forum about stream-side manners and etiquette. The one important point I picked out is a statement made by a fly fisherman who says - "I'm not a better person because I fly fish, I'm a better person because of fly fishing."
We are having a session this weekend with Dr Edward and his therapist. We're looking forward to another amazing session with bent rods, screaming reels, sore arms and blistered fingers.
Till then... God Bless and go wet a line ;D
regards Alberto

You guys have been great forummers in this forum and made this forum work itself. Fly fishing definitely made me a better person. Have to agree with you 100%. Flame throwers don't get very far in our forum. Cheerio

Anyway, thanks for sharing YH. Cheers Qwek Mr. Qwek...you want to talk about manners? I'm not such an arrogant ass that I do not see where I might have gone wrong. I apologised PROMPTLY for my "guns blazing from the hip" as you put it. But you guys got your heads so far up each others butts to even see that what I said MIGHT possibly be right. So pissed off that an outsider could come in and tell you guys off. Instead of looking at the logic of my words, I got childish attacks over my choice of nickname and email address??? And whomever my so called master is? I myself am responsible for my own actions and I stand by my words. My "masters" are not necessarily fly fishers or even anglers but those who practise ethical standards throughout their lives via their words AND their actions. And NO...lest I get attacked again for the last sentence, I am the first person to say that I am FAR from perfect and when I do screw up, I WANT people, even outsiders, to come right out and tell me off because that's how I learn. I wouldn't tell them to PISS OFF first. Anyway, if you guys want to continue doing what you think is right, then pls go on ahead.

Anyway, if you guys want to continue doing what you think is right, then pls go on ahead. Quote number 1 neverenuff, I don't know who you are and I don't want to even guess who you are. The people in this forum are all polite people(including me) We argue agressively sometimes, even to the point of being labelled confrontational. But we all did it for the sake of the fly fishing community. You come in with a sentence such as above is seen as provocative and an insult to the forummers here. What is pass is said. Alberto had put up a thread to get all the guys to move on. You come in here and re-ignite the fire. Please lah. For your sake or for the forum's sake please try to be more polite, okay. Quote Number 2 Now I don't think that is an apology sir. You "apologised" for your tone and you go on firing at the forummer again. But before the apology, you again say something which again make people see red. Why? We are not unreasonable people here. But we also don't like to be bullied with such remarks. So please, try to cool down and maybe post in a style which you think can be accepted by yourself. If people post the way you did on you, would you like it. If you don't want people to talk like that to you, then please refrain from doing that to others. You shoot the whole forum with a atomic bomb and level the whole place killing everything in the process. I have not even say anything and I already kena branded by you as a HYPOCRITE. There are others like Uncle Wong, CY and other foreign friends who had not even said anything and you kill them with that sentence above. Is it appropriate? I don't think so. You won't think so too. Those I quoted, thats where you had gone wrong. There must be a reason why so many people come out with guns firing at you, right? Please take alberto's peace pipe and smoke it and end this hostility. You will find that this is a very nice place to joke, talk and share our fly fishing lies. You could even go fishing with the guys here at their top secret fishing spots. Let it go okay? Please.

Hi Guys, Yesterday, Q, Andy, Francis and myself got together for a sending off session for Mat before he leaves for further studies in Melbourne next week. As usual, the action at Dr Edward's clinic was fast and furious! The usual screaming reels, rods bent to the butt, sore arms, blistered fingers, opened hooks, 40lbs fluorocarbon tippets snapping like cotton threads has become the norm. For me, it has been another great session with Dr Edward's therapists despite getting bullied by the GTs.... For starters there were the permits No1... ... and permit No2... ... and this lovely big eye emperor aka Leng Chiam... ... the most memorable is always the explosive strikes that results in maxing the reel's drag and hanging on for dear life... ... and emerging victorious against this large tripletail ;D ;D ;D I manage to catch Q in action as he goes head to head with the bruisers... ... and won the battle with this GT tipping the boga at 5 kgs. Great stuff Dr Edward, thanks for the great hospitality and another fantastic session with your therapist. regards Alberto ps - All hooks have been debarbed, fish has been carefully boga and with wet hand carefully cradeling the stomach or holding the tail, then quickly lifted for a quick "Kodak" moment shot and immediately revived and released in the presence and assistance of the good Dr Edward. If anybody still has a problem with this procedures, we have kindly suggest you retreat to some remote mountain in Timbuktu and live out your natural life as a hermit

Who is the one who "reignite the fire" by talking about manners and me trying to impart my master teachings to you all? To me this statement is pure arrogance. Nobody can come in here and say that anyone of you has done wrong? Billy...I already kept my mouth shut trying to let this matter rest. Anyway, to you and all those that have been unfairly hit with my so called "atomic bomb"... my sincere apologies ok? Believe it or not....My ONLY intention when I first posted was to ensure that the fishes are not unintentionally hurt. This did not start out as personal attack on anybody here on this forum! If this is still not acceptable to you all, then I don't know what else I can do.
