hi guys,
weather has gotten alot colder in HK. 6am, went fishing at Aberdeen reservoir: a. the PB fries are no longer seen: could either have moved to deeper spot as weather is getting colder with autumn, or polished off by the tomans in the reservoir. will see what happens in spring. b. kois, carps, tilapias & lampan are still active. kois & lampans went after the "fish food" sent by Alberto (esp. the red-white crasy charlies & red-white clousers. no hook-ups, all turned away when they came close to my position (must remember to kneel down). as the fishes were gathered under a large overhanging chinese birch, casting into the water under the overhang was very difficult. although I could cast the distance (25 ft) into the spot, my aim quite often ended up a little too high. final score: flyer - no fish, chinese birch: 4 flies.
will have to improve target casting & control during the shoot into the space. Guys, need your tuition & advice on this!
weather-reports indicate next week HK will get alot colder, ie. HK barra season is about to commence. will let you guys know the result.
Alberto, thanks for the flies, not sure if I am worthy of their sacrifice (1 of them is now waiting to light up on Christmas on the chinese birch). hope my aim improves.
Cold morning air, a misty lake mirrors sun smothered glow, lampan horde gathering, feeding, but branches..."ah so low". Line and fly, a liquid cast, silence, "ahh...the gods were kind", slow retrieve, a moment's hesitance, a fish! "will it be mine?" Alas....to turn at my shadow, "the gods were truly unkind!" "But son, surely, this is fishing", since a child I have been told, "for only the gods, to cast and catch, could one be so bold!"
cheers guys.

hi Qwek, Alberto and Billy,
fished this morning at the reservoir next to my flat on campus. so did not try out the bread fly yet. BUT....
finally a tilapia took my homemade "black spider" on a number 12 hook. felt really great. didn't think it would happen. so when the tilapia struck, I was so suprised, so satisfied & enjoyed the pleasure of the hit....I forgot to lift the rod to set the hook. lost the tilapia of cause. Felt great though!
thanks for the tips brothers
cheers

hi guys,
fishing in winter (though mild in HK), especially early in the morning is quite a task.
too early - no fish, as water and weather is still cold, but no wind as sun is not yet up to create pressure difference.
as the sun comes out between 7.30am and 10 am - fish become active, feeding both near bottom & surface of the water, winds created havoc with casting. 3wt rod & line becomes inadequate, a 5wt rod & line served better casting, especially with sinking tip or intermediate line. sinking line was great with bottom feeders. but loosing to the fish most of the time as sensitivity is lost to heavier line weight and being unable to see the strike on sinking line.
all in all: no fish, but a great day in the open, bloody cold & windy but excellent sunshine and getting tanned. what a paradox! no wonder my fat wife thinks flyfishing is for the "birds". Ah but...
great, the sunshine morn to see, excellent, a flyfisherman to be. winter's morn and feeding fish, fly on the water, a moment to wish.
blows cold and blistering winds on the neck, for many on days-off, "O to stay in the sack!" sun on the waters, waving grass in the vale, with fish on the line, while overhead eagles sail, Oh, for only to tell, a great tale!
cheer guys eric

Hi eric
I'm also one of the few fly fisher in HK. I have started f fishing just a while ago.
Just a suggestion, why dont you head out to the sea for the sea bass as they are abudent at this cold season?
Freshwater predatory fish isnt active thru the winter except for the black bass which has almost gone extinction in HK water.
it's really nice to meet a hk fellow here, have fun fishing~

Hi Eric I already have you on my msn Did you have luck at dong chung? Did you fly fish? i've love to go and to cast line with ya, but due to my wife's triplet pregnancy, i'm not able to leave her with my daughter. Unless I can have someone to look after them and making sure they are safe, I might be able to go out only for small amount of time. Anyhow, it's nice to meet you. I'll intro other flyfisher to you when we have a chance to chat. Jacky

hi jacky,
congratulations, triplets!!!! ...man, you are courageous indeed. me, no courage to be a father at all. so still no children after all these years. my excuse, and my wife's: too busy with work. actually i think the both of us makes lousy parents - she's too much of a perfectionist and i tend to spoil kids. good luck bro, and my best wishes to your wife.
tungchung was nice. it was late afternoon with the tide coming in, fish-activities is visible, but as the ferry was running through about every half hour the fishes tended to be a bit skittish. used a 4 inch white-blue-green minnow, could see the fish ( mainly green-sea-bass) chasing, but could not induce a take. i think i have to work on the retrieve a bit more. casting the distance of 45 ft was not the problem - used a 7-8wt rod with 8wt intermediate line - so had enough weight to cast the distance. but the arm really hurt after 2 hours of casting. lots of fun and anticipation though.
the lower aberdeen reservoir is another good place for freshwater fishing. the kois and lampans are always very obliging.
hope to wet lines with you and some of the flyers in HK.
cheers bro

Ask and ye shall receive I'm in HK for slightly over a month now... and will most likely be here for a year or two. The only fish I landed on fly here are 2 redfish (or red drum) at a fishing pond at Tsuen Wan. Me and a mate were landing so many on lures that we just had to chuck a fly at em. The locals here keep every single thing they catch.... it's gonna be tough with a fly. Hope to meet up for a fish.... bait, lure, fly...anything's fine. Cheers, Justin

hi agent X,
greetings. good to know you and your friend are having some good fishing in the paid pond. the saltwater ones tend to be better as bottom feeding and bottom baiting is not so common a practice with saltwater fishers here.
I'm still trying to be more effective with the fly in freshwater reservoirs and paid ponds.
will gladly take you around when time permits, or join you guys on your forays. my mobile phone is 91606378, and am resident at pokfulam road, next to the HKU main campus.
cheers bro eric

hi justin, if you are into lure, this time of the year there are some great jacks, barra and GT adventures at the following places: under the rail-bridge between Tungchung,Lantau Island, and the Airport; under the Shatin-Taipo flyover at Tai Shui Hang in Ma On Shan, NT (New Territories) East; SaiKung wetlands, NT East; for jacks and groupers over 2kgs go to the north east end of Ngap Lei Chou facng the Ocean Park, HK Island South; for potatoe-cod over 10kgs,hire a boat to go to the islands off Sai Kung; for sail-fish, hire a good mtor-launch go east from Sai Kung for about 50kilometers; finally for huge barras go to the ever faithful Ma-Hung or under the Ching-Ma Bridge in the NT West. Between January and May,go to the South ChinaOli-fields for " monsters" - deep sea-jigging that will take your arm off. Most respectable tackle shops organise these trips over the weekend; even fishing trips into the mainland. There are some huge tomans (largest caught on a lure: 14kgs) in the Tai Tam Reservoir, HK South, and Plover Cove, NT East. Using a fly in HK paid ponds will take some effort due to lack of space and bottom-baiting habits by bait-casters. In reservoirs, it a matter of finding the right fly for the right season and the right habitat environment. Other than that, like S'pore, in HK the opportunity is always there, even in the HK-Tsin Sha Tsui Harbour, under the jetties, the containers mid-stream-off-loading-barge-shelters - requiring the hiring of a speed-boat at the high-tide-flow period for good gamefish luring. Best times of the month to do this 29th to 4th and 13th to 17th, ie. the moon-phase tidal flow. For more accurate information get online HK has several good forums, or speak to the chaps at anydecent tackle shops.
