Hi Eric, Tks for the heads up. The directions are definitely better than any local at the local forums are willing to give. I've been in the vicinty of most of the places you've mentioned except Sai Kung, but not the exact locations... will probably give the shatin-taipo flyover (is it the one near the sewage treatment works?) a go this weekend... will chuck a fly if the geographical conditions permit, cos if they take lures, they'll most likely take a fly too... the only thing that's causing me grief at the moment is the bl**dy cold weather these few days. Hope the weather man's right about the weekend.
My number is 6107 7574. If you're free to catchup - either for a fish or just for coffee, give me a buzz... I work at the central area and live at Wan Chai.

hi X the spot under the taipo road flyover is right next to the SKH Holy Spirit Primary School, Ma On Shan. Take the Ma O Shan Rail, and get off at the Tai Shui Hang station at A exit. Walk toaward the sea and look for NingTai Road, along the shore. these you will see this huge overpass on your left. the school (a Band 1 school so most people in the area would know it) should be on your left.
will definitely call you for coffee or fishing. abit busy now with uni term just beginning. i teach at HKU and help out at the anglican theological college, and live at pokfulam in one of the HKU halls.
with a wife & church, trying to fish on weekend can be difficult, but she' good to let me off on public holidays. sometimes I can sneak an off-day during the week. will let you know.
there is another spot that I try to sneak in an evening fishing during the week. quite good one too, at Aberdeen - between the Aberdeen marine police headquarters and the Aberdeen boat club. go when the tide is right & you will be rewarded with mangrove jacks, groupers and snappers. its opposite the Jumbo boat-restaurant.
cheers bro eric

hi justin, eric
another "secret flyfishing" spot would be Dai Tam. I had a buddy fly fish there and spotted hugh red snapper at the depth of about 4ft and landed couple good sized grunter
i've tried sai kung on the flats and mangoves during the summer. no luck
wish i have the time to join your guys. hopefully in april i'll have time and look for the legendary "Ayu". If any of you interested, i can pm the spot for you as these are vulnerable species

My only chance to fish are on saturdays... sundays are for church, rest and other stuff. It's good to hear that there's still fish being taken on the fly... I'm still drawing donuts on every trip. Hi Jacky,
Tks for the info! Might give it go this Sat... either that or I'll be exploring the Tsuen Wan area.
Tried the floating restaurant area on Sunday morning for a donut. Also went for a few casts at the break water near the ocean park entrance.... nothing as well. Geez, it's tough.

Hi X
thank me when you are able to hook the fish. i bet quite a few ppl will go there this sat.
if you like bream on flies, tai po and ma on shan area are hot as of these 2 weeks
for what i've been told, ocean park break water is good for nite fishing only. but there are quite a number of scary story about the place if you care.
i know it is hard for fly fishing in hk. aint many big fish around. have you aimed for smaller targets? or go to freshwater instead?

hi guys,
long time. have been marking a ph.d dissertation as an external examiner. so very time consuming, esp if it is a really bad one. wonder why some supervisors would allow such dissertation to be put forward. rather irresponsible of this particular supervisor. on the other hand, some students should not have been admitted into the doctorate programmes in the first place.
now, back to a topic of my heart. flyfishing in HK & PBs.
HK & central China has been hit really hard by the severe cold front.... went to the Aberdeen Lower Reservoir to have a peek when the sun finally appeared after 2 weeks - no sign at all of the PB fries!
as for fishing in this cold weather. hardly worth it. with 6-9 deg centigrade & a blustery chill factor - deduct another 2 degrees off the scale. in the words of my wise late grandfather (an avid flyfisher) "Its so bloody cold, your bottom will fall off!".
cast for a few hours, no respond at all from other species (gone down deep in the middle of the reservoir), except for the carps & kois near the edge. even then, very weak nudges on the fly. no takers.
hope you guys had better times in S'pore. saw the article in rod and line, those barras look really hot.
willbe going to Tai Mei Tok pay-pond, Taipo, this saturday morning (3rd day of Chinese New Year - no visiting of relatives considered bad day for visiting, so 'fat' wife is going to S'pore with mother &friends to warm up).
Anyone interested. Call my mobile 91606378.
cheers bro eric

Hi Eric,
Maybe you should put up the supervisors for dissection, that way the students will have a real dummy to work on. ;D
Hope the cold front is not freezing up your lines too. Are you coming to Singapore as well. If you are hope you can stay until after the 18th for some fishing up in Malaysia.
Cheers and Gong Hee Fai Choy!

hi Qwek
great to hear from you. see the club is up and running. if long lost "long-distance" sons like me are acceptable & "overseas membership" is available, count me in.
am unable to join "fat" wife" & her friend to Spore unfortunately. Uni classes begins almost immediately on 5th day of Chinese New Year.
hope to come back to Spore during summer holidays to fish & renew friendships.
will be in Caius & Gonville College, Cambridge U. for the whole of May to teach & research my books. already contacted the flyfishing club there & looking foward to wetting lines there when time permit. informed them about this site & what you guys are doing back home. they are interested in your concerns and attempts to interest the next generation of flyyers.
hope you guys hook up some really great ones in your trips.
from a freezing HK:
Gong Xi Gong Xi!!!!!
cheers bro eric

Hi Eric
I totally agree with you. It's just not worth it fishing under this freezing condition. The feeling is even colder than when I was snowboarding in Whistler, BC
I've tried in Tuen Mun last week. It seemed like no life form under.
Will wait until it gets warmer to try again.
Happy new yr

hi jacky,
feeling is the same. went to plovercove reservoir - usually a very hot spot for fly at the point where the stream enters the reservoir. went on 3rd day of Spring Fest, temperature was 6 deg. C., no sign of surface feeding, spent 6 hours - result: 1 dace 1/2 kilo.
used a black spider, no luck, switched to old faithfull - a no. 10 muddler minnow, still no luck, finally out of desperation switched to a wet-fly a czech nymph - a weak hit & hooked.....to sum it all up - it was worth the cold freezing weather.
wife thought I was crazy when I called her (holidaying in S'pore with her mother) to add salt to the wound, she told me she was having a very hot bowl of bak-kut-teh at breakfast!!!!!
cheers bro

hi bro,
sau kei wan may turn out to be a disappointment. if you are thinking of saltwater flyfishing this sat. suggest you try under the taipo over pass at ma on shan at the tai-shui-hang outlet. heard the guys at triton tackles made a killing there week before last.
i was at the tai-mei-tok paid pond last wednesday (bloody cold but turned nice & sunny).... fingers got so itchy to cast the fly... sheer desperation to get out ....!
used the "blob-fly" when others didn't work (water was still very cold), at a little past 8am got smashed by a 1 1/2 kilo kwai-fa fish (sorry no camera), landed it and released. real satisfaction after 1 1/2 month of bloody cold weather.
at about noon tied up a pink shrimp fly dumped it in & let it sink, took out a sandwish to eat & hot coffee to warm up abit, after about half an hour (did not even twitched the line, guess it was sheer luck and dumb fish) shrimp was taken by a 3 kilo cat-fish on a number 2 tippet (about 8lb breaking strain)
in this ccold weather, paid pond are a gem as at least you know the fish is there.
suggest you guys try this pond at tai-mei-tok just next to the plover-cove catchment at taipo. am going again this wednesday. (my saturdays are all tied up until July)
will be at cambridge to teach a post-grad seminar this may, will fish as well.
cheers bro eric
